ART 309 - PROFESSIONAL ART EDUCATION FALL SEMESTER SEQUENCE

Sequential semesters focus on art learning theory, teaching methodology, and pre-student teaching clinical experiences in Art Education K-12. Students teach five Saturday art school lessons to two grade levels in K-8.

SATURDAY CLASS 3RD GRADE UNIT PLAN

IPTS Standard 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge - The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teachers create meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.

IPTS Standard 8- Collaborative Relationships - The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social and emotional development. This teacher works as a team with professional colleagues, students, parents or guardians, and community members.

Description: This unit plan was made for 3rd graders and was taught for three days at ISU. During this unit plan, students learned about biodiversity in the ocean and how to create pinch pot fish! 

​

Rationale: This lesson was used to teach students basics with clay and the importance of taking care of the ocean and earth.

SATURDAY CLASS 8TH GRADE UNIT PLAN

7D: understands how to organize the instructional environment to maximize students’ learning.
7B: understands a variety of current age-appropriate instructional strategies and their applications.

Description: For the last two weeks of teaching Saturday classes my group taught 8th grade. We taught about self idententity and how to express that through art. We did this by teaching about printmaking and artists who use printmaking to express themselves. Then, the students created their own designs to screen print onto a t-shirt. 
Rationale: For 8th grade especially, identity is really important to explore. Screen printing is also an activity that many students don't get the opportunity to explore. So, by combining the two we got great results!

7G. understands the need for continuing study, self-evaluation, and professional growth.

Description: I attend the Illinois Art Education conference in St. Charles, IL. While there, I attended many sessions given by experienced art educators.

Rationale: By attending I was able to get extra experience from other professionals. I learned about teaching diverse students, adding in more artists with disabilities, and learned about new materials. 

PROFESSIONALISM, ADVOCACY, & LEADERSHIP: PAL 1

7G. understands the need for continuing study, self-evaluation, and professional growth.

Description & Rationale: I attended a tour of University Galleries exhibition by Nazafarin Lotfi. This tour was given by Tanya Scott who explained her works of art and the meaning behind them. By attending, I learned about a new artist and gained ideas to teach future students.

PROFESSIONALISM, ADVOCACY, & LEADERSHIP: PAL 2

7N. advances his or her knowledge of current developments in the field by participating in professional development activities (e.g., coursework, professional organizations, and workshops).

Description: I worked our table at festival ISU for the NAEA. We helped other students create bookmarks and talked about what we do in the NAEA chapter.

7N. advances his or her knowledge of current developments in the field by participating in professional development activities (e.g., coursework, professional organizations, and workshops).

Description & Rationale: For the Sugar Creeks Arts Festival in uptown Normal I provided an art activity for younger kids. We focused on community projects by coloring feathers and adding them to a board to take photos in front of! we also painted a giant paint by number. The wings were then laminated and still hang in the museum today!
